During the session, I was encouraged to learn about Agile Project Management. Agile PM is an approach based on delivering requirements iteratively and incrementally throughout the project life cycle. The core of agile is the requirement to exhibit central values and behaviors of trust, flexibility, empowerment and collaboration. I have also thought of becoming a business consultant where Agile project management tool can help me in multiple ways. At first I was perplexed, why being in creative sectors I have to take this examination. However, when I took tutorials and tried to research more on it, I realized that this knowledge of project management is needed in different aspects of career path. It will help me in any of my future undertaking, the projects I pursue, also it will help in streamlining steps to follow and delegating process. From small to big projects (or organisations), Agile PM forms a base to follow.
Beginning the tutorials I found some key terms which are used in project management. The key roles and what responsibilities they share in an organisation. For example: project level team (top level) comprises of people who provides business perspective to the solution development team like Business visionary. The solution development team constitutes the people who help to create or develop a product, like programmers, software developers, testers, designers, analysts and whoever is required. Management team focuses on leadership and management of project. Process oriented role helps in defining and monitoring the process.
Moreover, AgilePM is based around eight principles and combines flexibility with sufficient forward planning, and collaboration to ensure goals are well understood by all stakeholders –
- Focus on the business need
- Deliver on time
- Never compromise quality
- Build incrementally from firm foundations
- Develop iteratively
- Communicate continuously and clearly
- Demonstrate control
Some of these principles are followed by us on daily basis. Hence, it is very important to understand the concept related to these terms. Following all the principles helps in developing a potential solution. Specifically, DSDM approach allows business to understand the scope and fundamental characteristics of proposed project and the way it will be created, before development starts. Moreover, organisations now-a-days need better ways of working and managing a project, hence Agile PM provide such firms a source in a short span of time. It can be used by any (small to big) organisation.
As I mentioned above, I am preparing for a consultancy career. But how can Agile PM help me in same? I definitely see it as a helpful tool. It will bring clarity in the beginning of a project and more transparency in terms of future solution development process. The iterative approach will help in better control over the project and faster deployment of product. Communications and stand-ups will help in increasing satisfaction and self-management (of team and myself). This approach has more chances of getting successful outcomes, making a project more flexible, adaptable and therefore more likely to succeed. This is how it can help me in future endeavors and career goals.
